Communication and Language Development
Communication and language development is a Prime area in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and forms the foundation for all other learning. It focuses on children's abilities to speak, listen and understand. It involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment that is filled with high quality conversation, stories, songs and role play. This language rich environment helps children to develop their social skills by using communication to convey their needs, wants, and feelings and enhances their confidence and skills to express themselves. Children will also develop non-verbal ways to communicate by using gestures and body language.
Listening and understanding are crucial life skills focusing on the skills to listen attentively, follow instructions, respond to speech and sounds, engage in a back and fourth conversation and ask questions.
Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED)
Personal, social and emotional development is about encouraging young children to develop a positive sense of self. It involves learning how to form positive relationships and respect for others, developing social skills, independence and learning how to manage and control feelings. Children achieve this through secure attachments with adults gained in a safe and nurturing environment. At ABC Pre-School we aim to equip all our children with these necessary life skills so that they can move onto the next step of their learning journey, confident, independent and happy individuals with a strong and positive self-identity.
Physical Development
Physical development combines gross and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills are large movements of the arms, legs and torso. These skills are the foundation for everyday physical activities such as walking, running, jumping, climbing, crawling and throwing and help to develop balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness. ABC Pre-School provides opportunities for young children to be active and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement.
We have a large secure outside area where the children can play with a number of toys including bikes, tricycles, scooters, buggies, balls and hoops. We also have a slide and a Play House.
Being a Pre-school we are able to take the children into the park for games and nature walks. This we do on a regular basis. Nature walks are particularly useful as this activity connects into all of the other areas of learning and development. Beddington Park also has a children's playground which we often use.

Fine motor skills are small precise movements of the hand and fingers. These skills are essential for everyday self-care tasks such as doing up buttons, zips and using cutlery and underpin the skills needed to draw, paint and write. ABC-Preschool encourages young children to develop their fine motor skills by providing activities such as building blocks, puzzles, arts and craft activities and one handed tools and equipment (scissors, play-dough tools) that promote hand-eye co-ordination and grip strength.
ABC Pre-school helps young children to understand the importance of physical activity on their health and well-being and to make healthy choices in relation to food.
